What Does It Mean for a Vacuum to Be CERTIFIED asthma & allergy friendly®?

Not All Vacuums Are Equal

All vacuums cleaners serve the same essential purpose: to remove debris like dust, dirt and pet dander from your floors, furniture and upholstery. But not all vacuums are the equal.

Some vacuums add particles and allergens you are trying to remove back into your air. If you have asthma and allergies, you need a vacuum that will contain allergens as it removes them. This will help you create and keep a healthier indoor environment.

So, what should you look for in a vacuum?

A CERTIFIED asthma & allergy friendly® vacuum is scientifically tested to be suitable for people with asthma and allergies. For a vacuum to be considered CERTIFIED, we test it for:

  • Its ability to remove allergen-containing dust from carpets
  • Its effect on allergen levels in the air during vacuuming
  • The integrity of the air filtration system
  • How well the vacuum works right before it signals a full canister or bag
  • Allergens released when changing the bag or emptying the canister

If a vacuum has a water-based dust collection system, it should not add humidity to the carpet or the air.

If a vacuum meets our standards by passing all of our tests, it earns our certification. When you shop for a vacuum, look for the CERTIFIED asthma & allergy friendly® mark on the packaging to know if your vacuum meets these standards.
