According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), kids’ rooms have the highest level of toxic substances in the house. With over 6 million children living with asthma in the United States and asthma being the leading cause of missed school days, this is a major concern for parents.
Bedrooms harbor dust mites in bedding, carpet and plush toys like stuffed animals. Other allergens like pet dander, pollen or mold can also be found in bedrooms. Harmful chemical off-gassing can also occur from common children’s products.
Jon Khalev, Head of Customer Success for the asthma & allergy friendly® Certification Program attended the NY Toy Fair February 22 – 25, 2020 in New York City to identify and meet with exhibitors and professionals of toy industries who see the importance of manufacturing allergy-friendly plush toys.
The asthma & allergy friendly® Certification Program had its start in 2005. Since then, the Certification Program has quickly expanded to textiles, paints, electronic appliances and much more.
The prevalence of asthma and allergies has grown exponentially over the past 30 years and is expected to continue to climb.
The Certification Program wants to help the 40% of America’s children who are impacted by asthma, allergies and respiratory issues by identifying allergy friendly toys and products that are tested by accredited third party laboratories and backed by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.
